Chapter Fifteen
THE FOLLOWING evening, I stepped into the vamp club and smiled at the sounds of Sneaker Pimps throbbing from the DJâs mixing table. The previous Master Vampire, Dominic, had been more of a techno purist and had never played Sneaker Pimpâs more atmospheric blend of electronica, but Dominic was dead and the new lord of the club, Lysander, had more eclectic tastes, which included my blood.
After announcing my plans to exchange blood with Lysander before going after Naala, Ewan had lashed out, demanding I stop the blood exchange. Xavier had also chimed in, adding how we might want the vamps vulnerable to my zombie-making power. I ignored Xavier and told Ewan in my most tepid tone that I was not screwing Lysander and that Iâd gladly trade the duty of exchanging blood with another necromancer capable of turning vampires into zombies. But there wasnât such a necromancer. And regardless of Ewan and Xavierâs wishes, I had to tell Lysander about what had occurred in Colma. While Iâd decided to don the demon skin, I wasnât going to adhere to their misguided propensity towards secrecy. If things in the demon realm went south, he had to know about the hell zombies. So did Kara.
Iâd tried to contact her, unsuccessfully, setting my worry gears churning. She was going after Adamâs spell book by perpetrating a Mission Impossible-esque tarot card rescue. I hoped Sybil didnât catch her in the act. Shit. Jax wasnât around to tell me if heâd heard from her. And it wasnât as if I could go knocking down the coven doors after her. Iâd have to wait until after my excursion to the vamp club.
When the vamps had insisted on the blood exchange, Iâd dreaded it. Now I looked forward to those moments with Lysander. No one knew how many blood swaps it would take for the vamps to achieve immunity to my power and I had no clue how weâd test it. Iâm pretty sure no vamp was going to volunteer as guinea pig. When the time came, I wouldnât miss drinking Lysanderâs blood, which, despite popular fiction, tasted like a nasty, metallic, milk of magma shake. Ly used his vampire influence to keep me from gagging and vomiting his blood all over him. So, yes, no longer having to suck on his blood would definitely be a good thing. But weâd lose the excuse to spend time together without others questioning our loyaltiesâthe vampires questioning why he would associate with the necromancer who had the power to kill vampires, and demons questioning why the demon necromancer would associate with the race that tried to wipe them out. It wasnât quite a Romeo and Juliet scenario because we hadnât, nor ever would, declare our undying love for each other. Our relationship had come to a skidding halt before it had ever gotten any real traction.
My growing intimacy with Ewan was confusing things even more. Weâd achieved a tepid trust and Iâd come to depend on his stability. And Ewan had been right.
